Government have today announced the extension of notice periods, with certain exceptions, including anti-social behaviour and domestic violence.
In cases of longer term rent arrears, if a tenant has built up a total of six months of arrears, landlords will now only be required to give four weeks’ notice.
The legislation comes into force tomorrow and can be found here: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2020/914/contents/made
Commenting, Isobel Thomson, safeagent Chief Executive, said:
“safeagent welcomes Government clarity on notice periods, applying common sense to the fact there are circumstances where there needs to be an expedited procedure for landlords to gain repossession of their properties.
“We urge Government to consider the measures outlined in our proposal where support is necessary for those tenants whose economic circumstances have changed because of the pandemic and with whom safeagents are working hard to help sustain their tenancies.”
