Ahead of the resumption of possession cases from September 21st, Government have published guidance on the possession action process.
Welcoming the guidance, Isobel Thomson, Chief Executive, safeagent, said:
“It’s positive to see this guidance, which actively encourages both tenants and landlords to try and reach agreement to avoid getting to the eviction stage. Eviction is always the absolute last resort and we know our agents are working hard to sustain tenancies and support tenants to stay in their homes.
“The importance of mediation and the use of payment plans is rightly highlighted in the guidance. safeagent advocates the use of digital platforms such as Resolve which is free to use and can be managed by agents, offering tenants and landlords a solution to dealing with arrears before the problem becomes unmanageable.
“This isn’t an easy time for many in the PRS, which is why we recently set out a plan to not only support tenants who are struggling to pay their rent, but the landlords who are facing financial difficulties as a result. We urge Government to look at grants for landlords, similar to the coronavirus small business grant, which would help to help keep tenants housed, whilst also allowing landlords to maintain their financial stability.”
