SAFEagent Awareness Week 2015 – Shawbrook Bank on the importance of consumer protection.

It’s Day 2 of SAFEagent Awareness Week 2015, the annual campaign that sees over 3,000 professional lettings agents unite across the U.K. to drive awareness amongst consumers of the importance of choosing a lettings and management agent who is part of a Client Money Protection (CMP) Scheme.

This year we welcome the support of Shawbrook Bank. M.D. Stephen Johnson talks about the importance of consumer protection in this short video:

The support for SAFEagent Awareness Week on the social web yesterday was phenomenal!Twitter was buzzing with tweets that included twitter cards and photos. Here are some of our favourites so far:

On Northwood’s blog supporting SAFEagent Awareness Week, M.D. Eric Walker commented:

“As founding members of the SAFEagent Steering Group we are delighted to see so much support for this important campaign. It’s great to see industry put their competitive sides away for a week and join forces in spreading a message to consumers about the importance of using an agent with client money protection insurance.

Make no mistake, SAFEagent’s campaign is making a difference and influencing policy by engaging with all elements of the housing sector.”

Meanwhile, on Imfuna’s blog, founder Jax Kneppers offered these words of support:

“SAFEagent Awareness Week 2015 comes at a very important time in terms of regulation of the private rented sector.  On 27th of May it became mandatory that all lettings agents display their fees – both on and offline – and also state whether or not they have client money protection.

Consumer awareness of working with a reputable agent is vital as this is such a simple way for consumers to avoid rogues and have a positive experience of the PRS.

Imfuna will always promote and support the raising of standards and we are proud to join with the rest of the property community to lend our voice to the 2015 campaign”.

SAFEagent would like to thank everyone who has tweeted, blogged, and created awareness of the campaign so far!  Another three days to go, so keep up the good work as this is already looking like the most successful and supported Awareness Week to date!

SAFEagent – Safe Agent Fully Endorsed – is a reliable mark denoting firms that protect landlords and tenants money through Client Money Protection schemes.  Set up ‘by the industry, for the industry’ and recognised by the Government, it is supported by Government, Citizens Advice Bureaux, The Property Ombudsman, Ombudsman Services:Property, the Property Redress Scheme, My Deposits, TDS and DPS.

All agents registered with SAFEagent are part of regulatory organisations/accreditation schemes in the Private Rented Sector and Client Money Protection Schemes which reimburse consumers in the event of misappropriation of clients’ funds. There are several schemes in the sector operated by NALS, ARLA, the Law Society, RICS and UKALA to which agents voluntarily belong. The scope of these schemes varies and consumers should contact their agent for full details of the scheme of which they are a part.

The SAFEagent Steering Group comprises:

Northwood; Belvoir; Foxtons; Touchstone; Winkworth; Hunters, Spicerhaart, Sequence, Connells, Countrywide, Leaders and Savills.
